Gentleman's Dub Club - Bad Girl

Director: Arran Busk

Our latest music video ‘Bad Girl’ follows the story of an empowered and care free young inner city girl caught up in the modern world of online dating, rebellion and being every parent’s (and potentially boyfriend’s) worst nightmare. Taking the role of the ‘Bad Girl’ was Alex Weaver who brought a much needed commanding confidence to the character. With this project we wanted to involve the whole band, so each member played one of our Bad Girl’s hapless dates and a bartender!

We had 8 separate locations in total, which certainly presented a challenge given that the shoot was wrapped in just two days. But with a highly motivated crew everything went to plan and we pulled off what was quite an ambitious shoot.

One challenge of this grade and also one of it’s strengths was the amount of locations and lighting conditions in the cut. For one scene I graded day for dusk which also involved first lowering the contrast to give a more dusky desaturated feel and then also adding a blue wash to give it a bit more life.

Another element of the narrative involved gradually getting away from this blue look later on in the story when things start heating up. The story structure and locations worked well for this in the later dancing and park scenes where there was more colour and the choice of pro mist filter from the DOP.
